The Charger football organization holds the prestigious distinction as the oldest continuously run youth football teams in the metropolitan area. Mr. Don Roberts started it as a 7/8th grade tackle team in 1962 at the old Waterworks Park. The next year a 5/6th grade team was added and the rest is history. These teams led the way for others to be formed and eventually the North Suburban Youth Football League was created with over 70 teams in the league today from 1st through 8th grade.
The Charger philosophy regarding youth football is very simple. Goal # 1 is to make it a fun experience for every player. Goal # 2 is to teach good fundamental football skills to prepare the player to compete at the next level of competition. Goal # 3 , we play to win, but will never jeopardize the mental or physical well being of any player to win a game.
We believe in utilizing leagues fees to purchase high quality properly fitting equipment to ensure the safety of each player as well as making improvements to our playing field. We for go fancy coaches outfits, big banners, and fancy parties. We invest in things best for the kids.
Our goal has always been to outfit each player with the best properly fitting equipment. That's why we have over 130 sets of helmets and shoulder pads when we can only carry 85 players in tackle. We also have 30 properly sized helmets for our flag teams.
Each team in the league is charged the same amount to be a member of the NSYFL, therefore each team sets their own fees. The fee to play for the Chargers is $200.00 per tackle player and $100.00 per flag player with a family fee of $350.00 maximum. The most important thing is that the CHARGERS have "NO MANDATORY FUNDRAISERS!!!!". We do not require that parents donate food or beverage to our concession stand. We take care of our field the year around and operate a concession stand and we ask everyone to help in these areas. When we need extra funds we host a golf tournament but never make it mandatory to help with the tournament. As each season begins we provide a yearly financial statement itemizing our income and expenses to all families.
One of the most important things that we stress is that we are all family. If something happens to one of ours, from 1st grade to 8th grade, we're all concerned and help in any way possible. It often carries forth long after playing youth football. We all truly believe "ONCE A CHARGER, ALWAYS A CHARGER." I can assure from first hand experience of this being the case. We emphasize sportsmanship and consideration of others at every game. We have a simple motto "WE WIN WITH CLASS AND WE LOSE WITH CLASS."
